Job Details

General Summary:

Leads internal communications strategy for the company, building leadership and employer brand, by reinforcing Dollar General’s culture, business priorities and operation goals. Mobilizes a team of skilled communicators specializing in employee communications, branding, event production, employee meetings and executive branding. Direct the team’s efforts in collaboration with peers in marketing/advertising, public relations, information technology, legal, investor relations, community initiatives, supply chain, store operations, finance and human resources.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Overall Employee Communications and Recognition: 35%

  • Lead proactive strategy and message development for all employee communication campaigns to enhance employee education, loyalty and recognition resulting in positive overall employee satisfaction. 
  • Direct the design, creation and production of all employee communication campaigns to reinforce business priorities, product launches, employee engagement events and programs to include company-wide memoranda, articles, executive recognition programs, intranet, in-house TV, posters, event signage.
  • Direct the application of internal employee engagement branding and its ancillary portfolio of logos by providing counsel and support for the creation of all internal graphic design and branding needs to include: company annual report design, internal logo creation, philanthropical event branding, program/department/initiative branding, company mission, values and operating priorities visuals in adherence with overall company brand standards.
  • Advocate for enhanced employee engagement and communications platforms in support of business goals for retention, engagement and education.
  • Select and direct relationships with freelance writers, graphics firms, videographers, photographers and other content partners.
  • Create, reforecast and control department spending to meet the company expense expectations and planning needs.

Employee Event Direction and Executive Support: 35%

  • Spearhead large scale employee events lead by our executives/decision-makers and attended by leaders across the organization. Direct the creation of talking points, memos and other written correspondence as well as presentation slides, video and other “show” pieces for employee education, awareness and celebration.
  • Advise and shape messaging/theme for quarterly leadership meetings, including the creation of multi-media presentations, speechwriting and show production.
  • Direct crisis communications and reputation-protection initiatives.
  • Set the agenda of quarterly employee town halls and direct the creation of all the accompanying show pieces including slides, talking points, video and other multi-media vehicles.
  • Advise DG decision-makers on internal reputation branding matters in support of executive specific messaging, company-wide program initiative and employee engagement/recognition efforts.
  • Control and direct messaging for executive correspondence and other official responses to individual employees and internal stakeholders.

Team Leadership: 25%

  • Build the team. Ensure DG has highly motivated, highly skilled individuals in key communication roles. Represent and advocate for the team in cross-function programs/initiatives support.
  • Lead and cultivate members of the corporate communications team by establishing goals for the department, measure individual results and coach for better results when appropriate.
  • Mobilize team members in collaborative work to support other departments and the company’s goals by integrating and coordinating, when appropriate, shared resources between the corporate communication team and business partners.
  • Mentor and encourage team members in soft skills, provide guidance on personal development.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills:

Supervisory, team management, team coaching skills

Excellent written and verbal skills

Mastery of AP style, proofreading marks

Significant presentation experience

Experience in advising senior executives

Excellent interpersonal and group communication skills

Results-oriented with excellent organizational, project and time management skills

Basic budgeting and financial analysis skills

 

Work Experience and/or Education:

College degree in public relations, corporate communications, or commensurate work experience in the writing or communications field

5+ years of communications experience (not in a consulting role)

5+ years of management and supervisory experience
