General Summary:

The income tax senior manager is responsible for assisting with preparation and some review of the Company’s quarterly income tax provisions. Due to the materiality of the Company’s income tax expense and related balance sheet accounts, strict compliance with internal control procedures is required in order to meet the requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley section 404. The income tax senior manager is responsible for preparation and/or the initial review of the Company’s federal and state income tax returns, in addition to estimated payments. Must be able to research tax issues and effectively plan in the franchise and income tax areas. The individual will be responsible for the supervision of three employees including the review of all government filings prepared by these individuals. The income tax senior manager will report to the tax director who will supervise and review the work prepared by the income tax senior manager.

Job Details

  • Preparation of quarterly and annual financial statement income and franchise tax provisions including SOX 404 compliance. Along with the tax director, will present these calculations to Dollar General management as well as the Company’s financial statement auditors.
  • Some preparation and initial review of federal and state income tax returns, income tax return extensions and estimated payment calculations, and amended income tax returns as prepared by the tax accountant and others within the tax department. Supervise the work of the tax accountant and review that person’s work (which will primarily relate to income tax return preparation and related computations).
  • Will be the primary contact person for all routine notices from tax authorities. Will work closely with the tax director on any federal income tax examinations.
  • At the direction of the Tax Director, Vice President of Tax, or based on a self-identified need, will prepare calculations and perform tax research concerning income and franchise tax planning.


  • Familiar with federal and state income and franchise tax laws.
  • Ability to effectively utilize computer spreadsheets to perform computations and to manipulate data (Excel, Vlookup, Hlookup, Sumif, Pivot tables)
  • Able to perform research using on-line, word search type resources (Checkpoint)
  • Experience with using tax software (Onesource Income Tax, Onesource Tax Provision preferred).
  • Ability to be creative when approaching an objective (such as tax planning).
  • Good communications (both oral and written) skills.
  • Adaptable to change and seasonal spikes in workload.
  • Superior work ethic.

Work Experience/Educaion:

  • College degree required preferably in the field of accounting.
  • CPA with big 4 public accounting experience is preferred.
  • Six or more years of experience in the income tax area.
